She Builds Stories helps women shape the female experience into stories for screen. We work with women carrying an experience that changed them — birth, loss, divorce, menopause, reinvention — and we help them turn it into narrative, and then into work that gets made.
Why we exist
Women are taught to normalise the things that change them most.
Childbirth where the baby might not survive. Divorce where you could lose everything. Menopause where your life falls apart and then something turns. These are the biggest dramas of a life — and they arrive at development meetings almost never, because women are taught they're "just how it is", or too embarrassing, or not desirable enough to watch.
That silence isn't an accident, and it isn't personal. The dissonance between what you were promised and what you actually lived is not you being wrong — it's you being truthful. We build the space where that truth becomes a story, and the story finds its format, its structure and its audience.

Founder
Alice Coulthard.
Alice built her career as an actor in an industry that priced her by age and attractiveness — until a birth that felt like a fight between life and death changed everything. PTSD, no maternity pay, no job, no outlet: she came out the other side by writing it down.
An MA in Creative Writing at UEA followed, then a dissertation monologue about childbirth that was selected for a major theatre festival — and a second career in development, ending up as Head of Development at an international film and TV company.
From that seat she saw how rarely women's stories even reach the room. She Builds Stories exists to change which stories get told, and who gets to tell them.
